About Us

Established in 1942, the Department of Urdu is one of the premier and oldest departments of the Amar Singh College. The Department has remained focus of activities with regard to the development of Urdu language which stands constitutionally an official language under schedule 8 of constitution of Jammu and Kashmir since 1889. Since department of Urdu emerges as the key department in the faculty of arts, a huge number of students prefer to opt Urdu subject as the Core subject with the motivation that Urdu subject has better prospectus in terms of job & employment. Being one of the official language of UT most of the record in the offices like revenue, police etc. is recorded in Urdu; hence job opportunities are better than other subjects. Scores of students have graduated with Urdu as one of the core subjects from this college and are rendering their services in public and private sector. Under Semesterized CBCS Scheme at under graduate level Urdu is now taught as compulsory subject for BA and B.Com Courses. In Order to develop a matter and spirit of creativity among the students enabling them to compete in the prestigious exams like IAS, JKAS, etc. Also under this scheme Skill Courses like: Urdu Translation and Urdu Journalism are taught which aims at providing hands on training, competitions, and skills in Students. Future Plans and Proposals: A Proposal of for the Introduction of Post Graduate Course in Urdu as already been submitted to the Cluster University Srinagar and almost 50% of the Syllabus for the same has been devised. However due on the going Pandemic the process has to come to the halt. The department under the national Educational Policy (NEP) 2020, has proposed Urdu to be introduced as 4+1 (Integrated) category subject.
